ComingSoon.net have published a story quoting Lance’s comments on the possibilities for a Millennium movie at yesterday’s Tron: Uprising press junket. Lance talked at some length about his continuing belief that the film will happen, stating, “It’s crazy that you wouldn’t give it a shot. It doesn’t have to be a $30 million movie either. There’s a lot of fans out there in 65 countries. I can’t go into any other country without them wondering when the movie is going to be made.“

He also mentioned the Back to Frank Black book as part of the big push for the film, and spoke again about the modern context that would suit Millennium so well, asserting the following:

“Ever since 9/11, the world has changed so radically. If Millennium was made today with those characters, it would be a far more interesting show than the limited palette they had with serial killers. I love the idea of a non-judgemental character like Frank Black was… He wanted to know why and how all these things happened, but he knew that judging someone for what they’ve done would just get in the way of finding out things. Imagine that kind of morality and focus, like a master chess player… When you trap a guy like Frank Black, who has that kind of imagination and you put him in a world like Bulgaria where everything is in Cyrillic and he can’t communicate actively with a lot of people, he has to do it in another way. I’ve thought of how it could be done. You just keep moving the pressure in on him about this kind of terrorist stuff. A terrorist plot. The pressure keeps building and building and building until you realize that that pressure gave him all the answers he needed. You would be gasping for air to wonder what is going to happen to this guy.“

Quietly, behind the scenes, almost as covertly as the Millennium Group itself, we are still working hard on the Back to Frank Black book. We like to bring you occasional news as to our progress: reminders that we are still very much on course to release a little later this year, but without teasing you too much just yet. (That time will come.)

One exciting piece of news we can confirm is that Frank Black himself, Lance Henriksen, has penned a foreword for the title. We are of course thrilled to have his further involvement, as always with the ongoing campaign. His opening words will set a modern context for Frank’s world, very much encapsulating what we hope to achieve with the book itself: celebrating Millennium‘s past whilst also asserting its enduring relevance in today’s difficult times, these comparatively early and uncertain years of the new millennium.

We still have some work ahead of us yet before we publish, but rest assured we will name a release date as soon as we can. We will also look to bring you other exciting news of the book’s exclusive contents in due course, as we continue to work on crafting a publication that says everything that it can about the series and why Millennium is so worthy of being celebrated, why it is as relevant now as when the series premiered, and why Frank Black is so deserving of a return.

Following our post on the great upcoming region 2 release of Space: Above and Beyond from Mediumrare Entertainment, we’ve been contacted by Julie Ng who made the supplements on the DVD. Julie is filmmaker and DVD producer who was previously an assistant to show creators (and Millennium season 2 producers) Glen Morgan and James Wong. She has a big love for Millennium, The X-Files and of course, Space: Above and Beyond – in fact, she admits to being the runner of Morgan & Wong Online as a teenager!

It was actually Glen was good enough to suggest she gave us a nudge here as to the details of this DVD release – and we’re very thankful he did!

Julie calls this release “an extreme labour of love done as a long-time serious fan of this series and a desire to make this for Glen & Jim - and especially, of course, for the fans to get a taste on what it was like making this show 17 years ago.”

As to the details behind the release, Julie says, “this is a small, boutique UK distributor, not a big-budget Fox production and it all had to come together in an extremely short period of time, limited resources and almost didn’t even happen at all, but luckily I was given the opportunity by Medium Rare to give it the old college try.”

As for details – Julie wanted to correct our previous post on the details of this two set release, nothing that some sources on the net are filled with “vague/inaccurate information” – so Julie is here to give out the full sumptuous detail as it is! These details are thereby verified!

“Basically, there is a retrospective documentary, BEYOND & BACK which is 75 minutes long and includes input from the entire 58th Squadron (plus Tucker Smallwood), writers, Glen and Jim, Thomas Wright, etc. There is also a 20 minute piece that focuses more strictly on the visuals – the design, look, tone of the series which is a little more technical and features guys like Tim McHugh and Glenn Campbell (Millennium alumni as well) and talented art department guys. There’s the original EPK interviews trimmed and cleaned up a bit, there are a handful of deleted/alternate scenes I pulled off old VHS tapes from Glen’s garage. There are conceptual artwork galleries. And lastly, there are 4 audio commentaries for: the Pilot, Dark Side of the Sun, Who Monitors the Birds and The Angriest Angel.”

Finally, a compliment from Julie that we took dearly – “I listened to Thom Wright’s “Back to Frank Black” podcast to help me get a sense of the man and prep for interviewing him for this Space:Above And Beyond set!”

Frank Spotnitz has long been one of the strongest voices supporting a return for Frank Black, and fans of Millennium should be reassured by the fact that he has now re-asserted that in response to a posting on his production company Big Light’s blog from the Back to Frank Black campaign.

Reacting to Troy’s reminder that alongside continuing calls for a third and final X-Files movie there is still a swell of support for the return of Millennium for one final outing, Frank acknowledges that it is a harder sell than The X-Files but confirms once again that both he and Chris Carter have considered this. Thanking those who run and follow the campaign, he states, “Chris and I discussed a story for a Millennium film some time ago,” and goes on to add that, “It would be wonderful to return to these characters once again.”

More on what Carter and Spotnitz have had to say on the prospect of a Millennium film will be captured in the upcoming Back to Frank Black book, but in the meantime Frank remains hard at work on Hunted, his upcoming brand new series for BBC One and Cinemax, tweeting earlier this week on how much he is enjoying filming in spite of what has been a rain-battered London here of late. There is considerable buzz for Hunted, which was recently placed by The Hollywood Reporter at number three on its list of can’t miss series, whilst Frank also discussed the series – as well as The X-Files and living and working in London – for Screen Daily earlier this month.

Expectant fans of Frank Black should certainly be heartened that, even in the midst of a clearly busy schedule and a new, high profile series, Frank Spotnitz still takes time out to repeat his endorsement for Back to Frank Black and a return for Millennium. We thank him as ever for his always enthusiastic support, and here’s to every continued success for his new projects alongside our ongoing aspirations for the resurrection of one or two past glories.

Good news for fan of Space: Above and Beyond, the dark future war epic byMillennium producer/writers Glen Morgan and James Wong, starring Millennium‘s “Lara Means”,  Kristen Cloke – especially if you are from the UK!

Space: Above and Beyond is getting its first truly worthy DVD boxset release from Mediumrare Entertainment on Region 2.

We’ve spoken to Glen Morgan who has confirmed he’s been involved in the “Making Of” feature and some commentaries – so we’re thrilled – not just for the fans, but for Glen and Jim – especially Glen. You only have to listen to Glen talk about the show on our Glen Morgan Podcast to see how much he carries the loss of the show- we hope that a decent DVD boxset release will be a great re-visitation for the pair and a chance to put their legacy back on the shelves in a package they are both proud of!

Millennium Group Sessions goes into a 2012 revival with a more relaxed podcast form chatting to fans, staff, guests about Millennium and even the larger world around us. As Lance would perhaps put it, Millennium Groups Session is going more “tribal”.

In this episode I speak to the two key people in creating the Back To Frank Black book being published later this year, editor in chief of Fourth Horseman Press, Brian A. Dixon and his associate editor – and the editor for this project – Adam Chamberlain. Both are VERY closely associated to Millennium fandom and Back to Frank Black. If you frequent here often, you most likely have read several articles by this pair.

So we chat casually about the book and the process of making the book and the larger issues that stem from the project in this 25 minute podcast.

Next weekend myself and my esteemed colleague Troy L Foreman will be chatting about the changing face of entertainment and what might – or might not – change in the industry in the near future… and perhaps how that might benefit Millennium!
